Shaving Cream Ice Skating

March 7-8, 2016

Dear Parents,

Today your child participated in “Shaving Cream Ice Skating” gross motor-fine motor-sensory center!  Most of the kids LOVED it!!  They practiced taking off/putting on their socks and shoes as well as washing off the “snow/ice” after skating in a basin of water.  They practiced skating forwards, backwards, around in a circle, skating fast or slow and side-to-side, all with assistance for safety.  It’s amazing to see how their balance was challenged with the slippery shaving cream and water on a plastic wrapped padded surface.  They were also challenged with various questions regarding the ice skating- “is it hot or cold?” or “is it slippery or sticky?” We hope they will share their experience with you!!

Sincerely,

February 29 - March 4

Happy Leap Day!

We had so much fun last week!

On Monday we had visitors from Connor Prairie come to visit us. We played with some toys, crushed corn (for corn bread), carried buckets of "water", used a tool to drill a hole, and learned about shearing sheep to make yarn!

We continued talking about the grocery store. We used the grocery ads to cute out things that we would like to buy and put them into our own "grocery bag". On Wednesday we read a big book, To Market, and worked as a large group to find letters to cover up. This helped us to learn about words vs. letters! On Thursday we made print art and on Friday we worked in small group to point to each letter as we sang the ABCs.

This week we will be doing LOTS of fun activities for Dr. Seuss' birthday! : )
Have a great week!

February 15-19

Happy Friday!

We have had quite a busy week! I created a grocery store in our house area this week for the kiddos. They have thoroughly enjoyed it! I brought in empty boxes, old coupons, gift cards, money, and a cash register. The kids have had fun "making" grocery lists and going shopping!

On Monday and Tuesday we worked "read" our own small book about what we see at the grocery store as well as a food patterning activity. On Thursday and Friday we did a new and fun activity that included counting dominoes and we also did sorting with different types of fruits and vegetables.
We discussed and created a chart of where we shopped for groceries. We also made a class grocery list of some of our favorite things that we buy from the grocery.

I hope that this opens a few up for some conversations at home about grocery shopping! :)
Have a great weekend!

Valentine's

Happy (almost) Valentine's Day!

This week we will be working with letter recognition by playing a heart matching game with a partner! We will also be working on creating patterns using colored hearts! We will be learning a new song about Valentine's day and how to spell HEART. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgAx_sQ0mqE We will also create a large heart full of things that are red and read a book called Love Monster!

For our Valentine parties we will be creating a Valentine bag that will go home with the kiddos so that they can "read" their cards from their friends!

I will be sure to post pictures from the Valentine's party as soon as  I can! :)

January 25 - 29

Happy Tuesday!

Yesterday we read The Very Cranky Bear!  The kids really enjoyed it! We also worked on our prewriting skills! I am very, very pleased to report that we have made SO much progress since the beginning of the school year. Thank you for working on skills at home and for being so supportive.

Today we will be making "Letter Tubes". The kiddos will be identifying and matching letter stickers onto toilet paper rolls (sounds silly, but I can almost guarantee that they will LOVE it!).

This week we will also be reading the story Snowmen at Night. We will put our prewriting skills to work to create our very own snowman!

This week:
- Scholastic order are due no later than Friday, January 29!

January 11-15

Whew! Last week flew by! :)

Today we watched the story, I see a Song by Eric Carle. After watching the video we made art while listening to classical music. The kids enjoyed the music! We will be reading the story  The Mitten by Jan Brett this week. As a group, the kiddos will help to re-create the story. We will also create a drawing of something that fits inside the BIG mitten.

I will be sending home two Let's Find Out magazine articles. Feel free to read and work through these with your kiddos! One will be about working as a team (and penguins) and the other will be about MLK day. The typically have small activities in them and the kids like to "read" along with  me. I usually have them point to certain parts of the reading as well as identify words and letters.

We will finish up WH- question data collection and begin sorting. Preschool goal is sorting by attribute: color, shape, etc. Pre-K goal is to sort by category: food vs. clothing, zoo vs. farm, etc.

Jan 5 - 8

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday break. I had a wonderful time celebrating with our new little family! :)

We will begin this (short) week by easing back into the routine. We will start discussing winter and all that goes along with the winter months! We will be reading Snow Dog, Go Dog by Deborah Heiligman and doing an activity based on location words. We will also be learning about and creating patterns with snowflakes this week!

I will be working with the kiddos on counting skills and Wh- questions! I encourage you to practice these skills at home! Wh- questions consist of what, who, where, and when questions such as :
- What cuts paper? What is sticky?
- Who drinks coffee? Who is tall?
- Where do trees go? Where does a cow live?
- When do you eat breakfast? When is it dark?

Along with Winter comes the possibility of a 2-hour delay.
The following is our school's delay schedule:
AM - 10:45 - 12:35
PM - 1:50 - 3:40

Have a great week!
